Butler Blue II’s tweet is proving to be as strong as his bark: Klout, a company that measures influence in social media, has named the live bulldog mascot’s Twitter feeds among the nation’s Top 10 most influential accounts representing a college or university.

The reach of Blue II’s tweets, run by Director of Web Marketing and Communications Michael Kaltenmark and found at twitter.com/butlerblue2, has grown significantly since the Butler men’s basketball team’s NCAA championship run in March and April 2010.

“The week of the Final Four alone, Blue gained something like 700–1,000 followers,” Kaltenmark said. “In May 2010 he had grown to 1,800 followers. As of today, he has 2,633 followers and counting.”Blue also tweets photo via a Flickr account. “He still receives several hundred if not thousands of photo views a day and has over 500,000 photo views all time,” Kaltenmark said.Blue II is just a portion of Butler’s overall social networking effort, Kaltenmark said. “Utilizing him as an ambassador via social media outlets has allowed Butler to begin creating an enhanced perception of the university and strengthened Butler brand all on his furry back.” The Twitter feed ButlerU, run by University Relations, promotes news, events and happenings across campus; it has 4,233 followers. Link to it at www.butler.edu/newsroom.Klout’s top 10 list also includes the official feeds of Stanford University, Syracuse University, Harvard University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of California-Berkeley, Tufts University, the University of Oklahoma, Temple University and the University of Minnesota. The Indiana University-Bloomington campus feed was ranked No. 14.
