The Butler Bulldogs will open the 2011 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament against Old Dominion at 12:40 p.m. Thursday in Washington, D.C. The game will be broadcast on truTV.
The 23-9 Bulldogs, seeded eighth in the Southeast Region, earned an automatic berth in the tournament on March 8 when they beat Milwaukee to win the Horizon League title. Butler is playing in its fifth consecutive NCAA tournament.
The Old Dominion Monarchs, seeded ninth, finished the regular season with a 27-6 record. They play in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Old Dominion, located in Norfolk, Va., is led by 6-foot-8 senior forward Frank Hassell, who averages 15 points a game, and Kent Bazemore, a 6-5 junior guard who averages 12.5 points a game. The Monarchs’ coach is Blaine Taylor.
The winner of Butler-Old Dominion will play Saturday against the winner of top-seeded Pittsburgh vs. 16th seed University of North Carolina-Ashville.
