Pieterse is Mellichamp Professor of Global Studies and Sociology at University of California Santa Barbara and specializes in globalization, development studies and cultural anthropology. His current focus is on 21st century globalization. He is the author or editor of 21 books and author of more than 350 articles. Recent books are Globalization and Culture: Global Mélange (second edition, 2010), Development Theory: Deconstructions/ Reconstructions (second edition, 2010), Beyond the American Bubble: Is There Hope for Uncle Sam? (2008), Ethnicities and Global Multiculture: Pants for an Octopus (2007) and Globalization or Empire? (2004).
