Butler Professor of Education Deborah Corpus says learning to write proficiently in cursive style “takes a long time and lots of practice” – time that can be hard to find in today’s crowded school day.
A specialist in literacy, Corpus spoke to Indianapolis Star reporter Scott Elliot about the trend away from cursive instruction for an article. As of July 1, the state of Indiana no longer requires schools to teach cursive writing. Instead, Indiana mandates schools to teach keyboarding in elementary school.
In follow-up to the article, BBC Radio and a Korean talk show also asked Corpus to weigh-in on the issue.
