Associate Professor of Communication Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh has been named assistant editor for Ecquid Novi: African Journalism Studies, the premier international peer-reviewed journal for the critical analysis of journalism scholarship, education and practice in Africa.
Published three times a year by Taylor and Francis, the journal focuses on Africa, but its academic interest and scope is transnational.
Geertsema-Sligh has served on Ecquid Novi’s editorial board since 2011 and has regularly reviewed submissions. The journal published her article “Challenging the Lion in its Den: Dilemmas of Gender and Media Activism in South Africa” in 2010.
She said she looked forward to working with the editor Herman Wasserman of Rhodes University and managing editor Arnold de Beer of the Institute for Media Analysis in South Africa (IMASA) and the University of Stellenbosch, both noted scholars in the field.
“I am a native of South Africa,” she said. “This appointment will give me the opportunity to keep my finger on the pulse of journalism scholarship on the continent.”
