Butler Ballet begins its 2013-2014 season with the beloved holiday classic The Nutcracker, Dec. 5-8 at Clowes Memorial Hall.

Dance 2013 104The Nutcracker will be followed by Midwinter Dance Festival, Feb. 12-16, featuring George Balanchine’s Valse-Fantaisie and a new work by guest choreographer Gustavo Sansaro, formerly of Luna Negra Dance Theater. This will be the first Butler Ballet performance in the University’s new Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts.

The season concludes magically, April 25-27, with Cinderella in Clowes Hall as part of the second annual Butler ArtsFest.

Tickets for the Clowes Hall performances are $17-$23 for children, students, and seniors, and $21.50-$28.50 for adults. A $2 Clowes Hall restoration fee will be added to each ticket.

Ticket prices for Midwinter Dance Festival at the Schrott Center will be announced at a later date.

Butler Ballet proudly presents the only fully staged production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker in central IndianaA holiday family tradition, children and adults will be dazzled and delighted by spectacular dancing, beautiful costumes, glorious scenery, and pyrotechnical magic.  The brilliance of Tchaikovsky’s music will be brought to life by the Butler Ballet Orchestra and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir under the direction of Richard Auldon Clark.

For its inaugural season in the new Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts the Butler Ballet will present two different programs in repertory. George Balanchine’s Valse-Fantaisie, staged by Butler Dance faculty member Patrick Hinson, will open each of the programs, and a new work created for the Butler Ballet as part of the Clowes Memorial Hall 50th anniversary by Spanish choreographer Gustavo Sansaro will close each evening. New works by Butler Ballet resident choreographers, Marek Cholewa, Stephan Laurent, Susan McGuire, Cynthia Pratt, and Derek Reid will round out the programs.

Butler Ballet performs Cinderella, a magical three-act ballet based on the familiar fairy tale.  Come take the magical journey with Cinderella as her Fairy Godmother transforms her from rags to riches, in spite of her wicked stepmother and her outrageous step-sisters. The story comes alive in grand ballet style with elaborate costumes and the marvelous score by Sergei Prokofiev performed by the Butler Symphony Orchestra. The Prince finds the owner of the glass slipper and everyone lives happily ever after!
