“I’ll See It When I Believe It: On Gender, Perception, and Nature-versus-Nurture”
As human beings, we tend to be focused on (and sometimes become fascinated or concerned by) how other people “do” their genders. Yet we hardly ever take a moment to consider how we see and interpret other people’s genders. With thoughtfulness, sharp wit, and a sense of humor, Julia draws on her own personal experiences having been viewed both female and male, and queer and straight, at different points in her life, to highlight how unconscious assumptions and expectations shape how we view other people. In addition to her personal experiences, Julia spent over two decades working as a biologist in the fields of genetics, evolution and developmental biology. She combines this background with her knowledge of gender studies in an accessible manner to forward a holistic view of gender and sexuality that transcends the typical “nature-versus-nurture” debate.
