Butler University knows how to use social media well. That’s the verdict of USA Today, which ranked Butler fifth in a list of the 20 colleges making the best use of social media.
“Butler’s social media is a win, primarily based on the fact that they have a Twitter account for their mascot, a bulldog,” the story said. “But Butler didn’t stop there, creating a social media storm during 2011 March Madness. Players and fans alike took to social media to share their excitement, making it fun for the world to follow their journey.”
Butler finished behind only Notre Dame, Syracuse, Texas and Baylor.
The story looked at schools that are “becoming influencers and brainstormers online,” where students and fans can interact with professors, athletics and admissions on social media outlets.
“These 20 colleges are doing it in a really interesting way,” the story said.
Michael Kaltenmark, Butler’s director of web marketing and handler of mascot Blue II, said he was pleased with the recognition.
“We’re in a good spot, and I’ve got my eye on No. 1,” he said. “We are currently identifying tactics that we can implement to keep us moving up the list.”
Butler – well, Blue II – also was recognized last week by Metromix, a local weekly paper, as one of the 10 “Top Tweeps” of 2011 for use of Twitter. Blue II tweets at @ButlerBlue2.
In addition to Blue (@ButlerBlue2) making the list, other Butler graduates who were also honored by Metromix include Chuck Gose (@chuckgose), Marc Williams (@MrKinetik) and Evan Strange (@VisitIndy).
