U.S. District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson ’79 will receive the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Hon. Paul H. Buchanan Jr. Award of Excellence in March. The award recognizes the Butler alumna’s distinguished career as a judge and her leadership in the legal community and community at large.
Magnus-Stinson graduated <cum laud e from Butler with a bachelor’s degree in French; she currently serves on the College of Education Board of Visitors. She is also a 1983 <cum laude graduate of the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis.
Only the third woman ever to be named to the federal bench in Indiana, she was appointed in June 2010.
Previously, she served as a magistrate judge in the Southern District of Indiana (2007–2010), superior court judge for Marion County, Ind., (1995–2007) and counsel and deputy chief of staff to Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh (1991–1995). She maintained a civil litigation practice at the firm of Lewis & Wagner from 1983 to 1990.
